About the Odd Fellows

A global fraternity united by the pursuit of friendship, love, and truth

What We Are

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows is a non-political, non-sectarian international fraternal order dedicated to personal and social development. We are known as the "Three Link Fraternity" — the three links symbolize our core principles: Friendship, Love, and Truth.

As a mutual aid society, we are committed to visiting the sick, relieving distress, burying the dead, and educating orphans. These four fundamental charges have guided our actions since our inception and remain at the heart of everything we do.

Currently, we enroll approximately 600,000 members across 10,000 lodges in 26 countries worldwide. We provide frameworks for charitable work, social activities, personal development, and community service.

Our Core Principles

The Three Links That Unite Us

Our Mission

To Improve and Elevate the Character of Mankind

This simple yet profound mission statement guides everything we do. We believe that through mutual support, education, and charitable work, we can make the world a better place one person, one family, one community at a time.

Our Four Fundamental Charges

  • Visit the Sick: We provide comfort and support to those who are ill, ensuring no one faces health challenges alone.
  • Relieve Distress: We offer assistance to those experiencing hardship, whether financial, emotional, or physical.
  • Bury the Dead: We ensure that all members receive a dignified farewell and that their families are supported during their time of grief.
  • Educate Orphans: We support the education and development of children who have lost their parents, giving them opportunities for a better future.

What Makes Us Different

A Unique Fraternal Experience

The Odd Fellows stand apart from other fraternal organizations in several important ways:

First National Fraternity to Accept Women

On September 20, 1851, we became the first national fraternity in the United States to accept women through the establishment of the Daughters of Rebekah degree. This progressive step reflected our belief in equality and the valuable contributions of all members of society.

Non-Political and Non-Sectarian

We welcome members from all political viewpoints, religious backgrounds, and walks of life. What unites us is not shared politics or religion, but shared values of friendship, charity, and personal development.

Focus on Practical Charity

While many organizations focus solely on social activities or philosophical discussions, the Odd Fellows emphasize practical, hands-on charitable work. Our members actively engage in their communities, making tangible differences in people's lives.

Comprehensive Personal Development

Through our degree system and lodge activities, members have opportunities for continuous learning and self-improvement. We provide frameworks for developing leadership skills, public speaking abilities, organizational management, and moral character.

Our Global Presence

With lodges operating in approximately 26-30 countries worldwide, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows is truly a global fraternity. Our international presence allows members to connect with brothers and sisters around the world, sharing experiences and supporting charitable causes on a global scale.

We maintain inter-fraternal relationships with the Manchester Unity of Odd Fellows and the Grand United Order of Oddfellows, ensuring cooperation and mutual support across different branches of the Odd Fellows family.

From our origins in 18th century England to our modern presence across six continents, the Odd Fellows continue to grow and adapt while remaining true to our founding principles of Friendship, Love, and Truth.
